THE PORTRAIT OF THE FOUNDERS
Antoine and Ugo are the founders of La Môme Groupe. Originally from Lyon, they opened their first restaurant in Cannes in 2015, and we asked them a few questions.
Please give us a summary of La Môme group.
La Môme group currently consists of four establishments: La Môme Restaurant, La Môme Cocktail Bar just opposite, La Môme Plage (restaurant and private beach) and Mido japanese restaurant. There were just 6 of us at the start, but we now have a team of 90, rising to 180 in the high season.
Tell us a bit about your journey so far.
We started out in Lyon as servers. Then we decided to leave our home area to do some seasons in restaurants elsewhere. That’s how we ended up in Saint-Tropez. Through our network, we were given the chance to work in a renowned establishment in Cannes: Le Bâoli. And so we moved to Cannes. We started out as servers, then became head waiters, then restaurant managers and finally beach managers. In 2013, we were given a fresh challenge: managing the beach of the Majestic Barrière. These were all great experiences because we learned so much in these various establishments, but our ambition was to open our own restaurant. And this is what we did in May 2015 when we opened La Môme on Rue Florian in Cannes with help from financial partners.
Why the name “La Môme”?
The name refers to La Môme Moineau – Lucienne Suzanne Vreurick – a flower seller who worked in the nightclubs of Montmartre and Montparnasse in Paris in the 1920s. She became a singer and then a billionaire by marrying a rich Puerto Rican engineer and businessman. She became somewhat of a celebrity, living the high life on the French Riviera and was owner of Bagatelle villa in Cannes. For us, this name epitomizes the glory days of the French Riviera.
What type of place did you want your
restaurant to be?
Somewhere to go and have fun with friends! An establishment for 40-60 year olds, elegant, classy but not pretentious, lively and with great food. We felt that Cannes didn’t really have such a place. This is what we wanted our restaurant to be.
And do you think you were successful?
Yes, but we won’t rest on our laurels! Every night is a new adventure, and we feel it is extremely important to constantly provide a great experience, to exceed expectations, especially to our regular customers. Being the perfect hosts and topquality service are our priorities, and we must never lose sight of the fact that the customer is king.
And the adventure didn’t stop there. You
opened other places in Cannes?
Yes! In 2017 we opened the cocktail bar opposite La Môme restaurant. We took over the Plage Royale in 2018 and renamed it La Môme Plage for consistency with our downtown restaurant. And then a few months later, we started Mido, a Japanese-inspired restaurant, in the same street as our first two establishments.
What type of customers do you attract?
A mix of locals, foreigners, conference delegates, tourists… That’s how we like it!
Antoine and Ugo are the founders of La Môme group. Originally from Lyon, they opened their very first restaurant in Cannes in 2015. Meet.
Can you tell us about the La Môme group?
Today, La Môme group has four establishments: La Môme restaurant, La Môme cocktail bar opposite, La Môme Plage (restaurant and private beach) and the Japanese restaurant Mido. At the beginning we were only 6, so far we are 90 and reach 180 people in season.
How did you get there?
We made our debut in Lyon, as servers. Then, we decide to leave our native region to make seasons in the restaurant business. It is therefore quite natural that we find ourselves in Saint-Tropez. Through the network, we have the opportunity to work in a renowned establishment in Cannes, the Bâoli. We are settling in the region. We start as waiters, then row managers and restaurant managers first and then beach managers. In 2013, a new challenge awaits us: taking over the management of the Majestic Barrière beach. For us, these are very good experiences because we learn a lot in these different establishments, but our ambition is to acquire our own restaurant. This is what we are doing in May 2015 with the opening of La Môme at 6 impasse Florian in Cannes and to achieve this we have been able to count on the help of financial partners.
Why La Môme by the way?
This name refers to La Môme Moineau, Lucienne Suzanne Vreurick, a flower seller in nightclubs in Montmartre and Montparnasse, in Paris in the 1920s. She would become a singer and then a billionaire by marrying a wealthy Puerto Rican engineer and businessman. This woman, who is going to be talked about a lot in the social section, is a regular on the French Riviera and is notably the owner of the Villa Bagatelle in Cannes. For us, this name recalls an era, the heyday of the French Riviera …
What do you think your restaurant should look like?
A place where we would like to go out with our friends! An establishment open in the evening for 40/60 year olds, elegant, chic but not too much, lively and serving quality dishes. In our opinion, there was not this type of place in Cannes. This is what we wanted our restaurant to look like …
Is the bet successful?
Nothing is ever won! Every night is a new adventure. We are committed, especially to our regular customers, to constantly offer an experience that meets their expectations. We focus on quality of service and hospitality and we never lose sight of the fact that the customer is king.
The adventure does not end there, you are going to open other establishments in Cannes …
Yes ! In 2017, we are opening the cocktail bar opposite La Môme restaurant. We are taking over the Plage Royale in 2018, which we renamed La Môme Plage, in line with our restaurant in the city center. Finally, a few months later, Mido, a Japanese-inspired restaurant, was born in the same Florian dead end as the first two establishments.
Who frequents your establishments?
A mix of locals, foreigners, conventioneers, tourists … that’s what we love!
